simple math

day 274

Still trying to recover from the awesomeness that was yesterday, so I spent the day sleeping, sitting around, doing homework, and thinking up awesome photo concepts.

Blogger Spotlight: Lauren of Someone Like You

I'm especially excited for this month's Blogger Spotlight, as Lauren has become one of my favorite blogger friends. She kindly agreed to be September's Blogger and do a little interview with me, so without further adieu, here's Lauren!

1. First things first, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Alrighty! :D My name is Lauren and I’m a bashful, nineteen year old spirit who’s a freshman in college studying fashion merchandising. I believe in going after your dreams, not holding anything back, and never (ever) having too many dresses with peter pan collars ♥

2. Why and when did you start blogging?

I started blogging in November of 2009; almost three years ago! Golly do I feel like an old lady, heh. But I found that I could never consistently write in a diary so I thought that I’d give blogging a go and see if it was easier. My blog originally started out as a diary, something no one was supposed to even read. At the time I was still developing and finding my own personal style, as well, so I started documenting my every day outfits to see how I transformed. Someone Like You has been a fashion + diary blog ever since!

3. If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, which outfit would it be?

Well, I don’t care if it’s 100 degrees…I at least have to have one of my berets on! Besides that…my favorite dress that’s lace and mint green; it’s literally the dreamiest and I wear it nearly every day anyhow ;)

4. What is one piece of advice you can give to people just about to or first starting out in college?

Push yourself. Don’t let the person you were in high school define who you were in college. You don’t have to have the stigma you had there; college is a fresh start to be the gal you’ve always wanted to be. I was so shy in high school and wasn’t involved in anything…I’m really trying to change that here at college and not fall into that comfort zone. I want to have a college experience with no regrets !

5. What was/is the hardest thing about college so far? The easiest (or best)?

It’s probably so silly but it’s the honest to goodness truth…it is so hard to take showers instead of baths! I’ve taken baths my entire life. It’s my time in the evening to sit, relax, read, and think. In a shower…er, I just don’t know what to do! Still haven’t figured out how to shave my legs… (don’t laugh at me!) The best is getting to study and do what you love. There’s no one here at college telling you what to do; your life is what you make it right now. I am the happiest I’ve ever been studying fashion; it was the best decision for me.

6. What is one style or trend you’ve never really been excited about?

I really don’t understand the whole bandage skirt trend that’s so popular. They just look so uncomfortable; like you can hardly move. Give me a pretty fit and flare dress any day!

7. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would go to Paris (so stereotypical, I know). I’m just such a romantic and a dreamer and I feel like Paris is the ultimate place for individuals who are those things . I want to explore the streets, twirl around in a pretty dress, drink expensive coffee at an outside cafĂ©, visit the original Chanel, look at cute French Boys, smell flowers at the street venders, speak bad French, and try a real macaroon. Paris probably isn’t any of these things, but even if it’s not, I want to find that out for myself.

8. Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Happy. I’ve had a tumultuous few years and I’m still going through tumultuous times. I hope that all of this is worth it and I can be the one thing I truly want out of my life here on Earth; happy.

Lauren, thank you so much for letting me interview you! Everyone, be sure to check out Lauren's blog, Someone Like You, today. You definitely won't regret it!

awaiting the night

+ Cannon Beach

day 273

The first thing I thought when I woke up this morning was, "Did yesterday really just happen?" I'm still trying to process all that occured. On Friday my friend Ben Holtrop asked me if I wanted to hang out with him and a couple other photographers all day Saturday. Of course I said yes (and might have possibly teared up and jumped around everywhere) because not only was I going to be able to hang out with Ben, but also my friend Jenna, Dominique Berho, Shane Black, and Sarah Ann Loreth! They are all extremely talented people and some of my biggest inspirations when it comes to photography and all around awesomeness.

Ben, Jenna, Dom, and I all drove to Portland to meet up with Shane and Sarah for sushi. After eating delicious food, running to REI, (and Jenna and me getting lost--I mean, going sight seeing), we headed out to the gorgeous Cannon Beach. My pictures of the beach definitely do not do it justice. The smells, the sounds of the waves, the driving wind, the numb toes, and the mist fading the mountains into the sky--well let's just suffice to say that I could have easilly lived there for the rest of my life.

Sarah aka the coolest person in the world.

The super awesome Ben.

We went exploring along the beach and after being dumbfounded by how breathtaking everything was, we got to work taking photos (and by work I mean having the time of our lives). I took pictures, other people took pictures of me, man, I was in heaven. We talked about how photography is so awesome because it really brings people together. If I hadn't have gotten into photography, I would have never even known of these amazing people, much less actually had the opportunity to meet them. I think that's my favorite thing about photography, getting to meet truly incredible people. Just being around them really inspired me to work even harder with my photography and to put forth every single bit of my energy into doing what I love.

Sarah taking a photo of me! (I might have been freaking out just a little bit inside at this point.)

Ben taking a photo of Shane, the ultimate master of landscape photography.

After we watched the sunset (Alaska doesn't have great sunsets so I was totally blown away by all the beautiful colors), we drove a couple miles to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and ate more yummy food. Then it was time for the two hour drive back to the real world. Gosh, even thinking about everything doesn't make it seem real. I'm sad because I know I'll get off this high soon and get back into the swing of school and real life, but for now I'm going to channel all this excitement and stretch it out for the rest of the 365 project.

Dapper Dominique with his infinite film camera knowledge (also thanks for helping me with my film camera!).

I can't believe that within the first two months of living in Oregon I have been able to hang out with such insanely brilliant people. I can't wait to see what the next four years hold!

When I edit the rest of my photos, I'll make another post for you guys, so stay tuned for that!

the secret garden

day 272

Today was fantastic. I was surprised with the most beautiful necklace with Matt's initial on it, as well as an invitation to a fantastic adventure that I'm keeping a secret because it's that awesome and I am insanely excited for it. All shall be revealed soon enough!

where's winter?

shirt: mom's closet // shorts: thrifted // bow: from tabatha

Anchorage is supposed to get its first snowfall this weekend, and here I am still sweating in shorts and a t-shirt. I am not the biggest fan of wearing my hair up, but I find myself doing it more and more just for the sake of survival. I don't think I'll ever get used to 80 degree weather at night after 40 degree weather in the mornings. But regardless of the strange sunny weather we have been having, it's going to be a great day for me. And I hope it is for you!

earth/sky

day 271

Today was a mightily productive/lazy day at the same time. Tuesdays and Thursdays I'm done with class by lunch time, so I have the rest of the day off to do whatever I want. So today I registered to vote, impressed boys by playing Halo and actually killed some aliens, went to a newspaper meeting (and actually get to do something really exciting that I can't wait to share with you guys), cleaned my room, and worked on some future blog posts! The days are long, but the weeks are short. I can't believe we are already almost done with our fifth week of college.

pick up that dirty crown

day 270

My Wednesdays look like this: I may or may not wake up early to go to breakfast. If I do, then I come back to my dorm to study or relax. If I don't, I sleep in and eat cereal in my room. Then I go to chapel. Then right after that it's college algebra, where I try not to fall asleep, and Bible where I start to wake up again. Then after that I go to a late lunch, where I either sit by myself or if I'm lucky I see someone I know (all my friends go to lunch when I have class). Then I have an hour to take photos or do any last minute psychology homework before class. After psychology I have twenty minutes to change/relax before it's off to work. I work for the set/scene shop in the theater department where I am helping build the set for the upcoming play. I use a power drill and power saw and power everything and cut up my hands and get bruises and sweat a lot and feel slightly intimidated by all the upperclassmen boys for an hour, but it's an awesome job and I'm really glad I got it instead of the sewing job. Then after work I go straight to dinner, and then after that it's resting time where I update my blog or do more homework or paint people's nails or watch episodes of Community with the gang.

It's a busy day (which is also repeated on Mondays and Fridays), but I love it so much. I mailed my first package today, signed some job paperwork, and filled out papers to become a registered voter. I'm planning a spring break trip with my friends and next year's living situation (we want to get our own house). I love life, I love my friends, I love my boyfriend, I love my family, I love school, I just love everything. You guys don't even know how happy I finally am.

smells like home

dress: thrifted // shirt: from Matt (boyfriend) // shoes: target

One thing I hate? Pajamas in public. If a person makes an effort to get out of bed, they have enough effort to put on real clothes. However, I am a firm believer in comfortable clothes, and if you're lucky enough, you have those pieces of clothing that literally feel like you're wearing pajamas. This dress is one of those things. I could just snuggle up in it all day. I bought it on a shopping trip with my friends for only $1. Welcome to thrift stores in the lower 48! I think I could get used to living in Oregon.

On days when I especially miss Matt, it's nice to wear one of his shirts that he gave me. I have another one that I wear occasionally, and I swear they still smell like him. So cheesy, but it feels like he's giving me a hug whenever I wear it.

Hope your day treats you well! You are awesome.

cyber spaces

day 268
sunwashes

day 269
crowded spaces

Blarg, two photo dumps in a row. It isn't a matter of me not having enough time to post things, it's just that 1. I am lazy and 2. ... nope, it's just that I'm lazy when it comes to actually editing photos. It's just that I have to find a nice balance between relaxing, doing homework, socializing, and doing my own personal projects. But I am ready to get on a good schedule and actually put forth effort. I'll have an outfit post up tomorrow and some other fun projects lined up, so stay tuned for awesomeness!

Long time no see! Here are the 365 photos from this past week. I have been so busy doing other things that I couldn't find time to upload them, so I woke up early this morning to get this and other things done. Hope you all have an awesome week.

Happy Birthday, Moriah!

Happy Birthday, Moriah! Sorry I can't be there to celebrate in person, but I promise I'll be on skype when you open your presents. You're the best little sister ever. I love you and miss you a lot and can't wait to make snowmen with you during Christmas break. I hope you have a great day!

falling through

day 261

(My two favorite necklaces.)

I feel so bad not putting forth any effort into this project. I guess it's one of those phases that always comes with doing a 365, but it's so frustrating because I want to actually spend more than two minutes on a photo. I took this literally thirty seconds before I went to bed. It's not that I'm forgetting to take a photo, it's just that I don't really feel like doing it. Hopefully tonight I'll get a good self portrait in, because I haven't really done a creative self portrait that wasn't tied to an outfit photoshoot since day 233. That's almost a whole month. It's not that I love taking pictures of myself for its own sake, just that it's incredibly therapeutic and I need that in my life. So I'm planning on taking a creative picture tonight--crossing my fingers that the ceramics lab will be empty when I go.

Other than feeling guilty about letting the 365 project fall through the cracks, I'm the happiest I have been in a long time. It's funny because I really questioned if college was right for me, but went because that's what you're supposed to do after high school (plus I didn't have a "real" job and didn't really want to live with my parents ... sorry Mom and Dad, haha), but going to college and specifically my college was definitely the right decision. I love it so much here. And on that note, I'm off to not be distracted by the internet but instead do some homework. Wish me luck!

chasing light

dress (underneath)/skirt/lace shirt: thrifted // leggings/shoes: target

Look at my hair! After I dyed the ends purple, everyone dyed theirs blue, so when they did touchups another night, I decided to dye a strip blue! It's so much fun and makes me smile every time I see it.

While I was walking to class in this outfit, there was a tour group of Asians going into the building I needed to go into (we have an exchange program and I really love it). And two men stayed outside the building and took pictures of me with their giant cameras! It was insane and I was slightly creeped out. So I'm probably on some random Chinese street style blog. Heck yeah man!

Hope you guys have an awesome day!
