at the crossroads

+ abandoned building

day 286

Today we sleuthed around and discovered an abandoned train station from the 1800s. Nowadays the area around it is used to store construction equipment, but the building itself has remained somewhat intact. I really love exploring old buildings, even though this one wasn't very big. It's so interesting to think that at one point people actually used it, and that no one has bothered to tear it down yet.

Personally, I am glad it and many other abandoned buildings are still standing, because it makes for awesome photo (and cinematic) opportunities. My friend Jenna is working on a film project that involved Ivy dancing, so we headed to the gym for her to warm up and then we followed the ever trusty google maps out to the station. Today was also the first day of hard rain in Oregon. I didn't wear the right shoes and got soaking wet when I stopped caring about putting my rain jacket hood over my head, but it was an awesome day nonetheless.

While we were heading back, Taylor saw some people feeding llamas and chickens and goats and horses, and she made us pull into the random people's driveway to go pet the animals. I can only imagine what Jim (I think that's what his name was) and his little girls thought when they saw four stranger girls running in the rain towards them. But we got to feed all the animals and they even gave us fresh eggs! It was a glorious (and hilarious) end to an awesome day.

fall break

shirt/cardigan/headband: borrowed // pants: gift // shoes: famous footwear

This is my typical lazy day look, but I really wanted to do an outfit post about it for the sole reason that I finally mastered the scarf hair tie look! My hair keeps getting longer and longer and a whole new hair world that I never knew about is opening up. I can't wait for my hair to get really long so that I can do crazy braids with it.

I'm super excited for today. First of all it's Friday, which is exciting in of itself, but we also got a day off of school for our "fall break," so some of my friends and I are planning on going to an abandoned building and taking some pictures! Hopefully we'll actually be able to find said building. Google hasn't been much help so far in finding locations but I'm sure if we drive around enough we're sure to find something, hah.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! What are you guys planning on doing?

speak up

day 285

view here.

Today I woke up to the most beautiful fog, so after fitness class (at 7:40 am ... don't ever take a class that early) I ran to the track field and took this picture. It was definitely outside my comfort zone because there were people walking everywhere and there was me running around in a white dress flipping my hair in front of a camera. But hey, I got a good picture out of it and I was done with my 365 photo before 9 in the morning! The rest of the day was incredibly lazy. My roommate Annette and I have spent the majority of our evening playing nertz with new friends and I think we are going to watch some movies in a little bit. Needless to say, I love college life.

finding your passions

Hooray, it's the last day of school for the week! Our school's "fall break" was getting Friday off, but hey, I'll take whatever I can get. Thursday is my easy day anyways; I have fitness and ceramics in the morning and then I'm done. I really do love my schedule that I have, except I definitely could have taken one or two more classes this semester. I keep telling myself that it was a good idea to take first semester easy, but I have been thinking* about double majoring in English and Studio Art (with concentrations in Creative Writing and Photography), so the stress of getting two majors in plus my gen-eds has been on the back of my mind. *and by thinking I mean I am going to do this.* I just have to sit myself down and map out the next four years, which is a stressful task in of itself, especially because there are so many classes I want to take.

College really has great opportunities. In high school I never even had the chance to take a ceramics class and now I want to throw pots and plates and bowls for the rest of my life (so my future husband should keep in mind that I really want a throwing wheel in our house). Same with my scene shop job. Now all I want for Christmas is my very own tool kit, complete with power drills and saws and all kinds of stuff. I can't wait to see what other passions I find in college.

I hope you have an awesome day!

illuminata

day 284

I don't really like this. I know I can do a lot better with my photos but something isn't clicking right and I am making no progress. But hopefully this weekend I can actually schedule 365 photoshoots and get all the ideas that I sketch down in front of a camera.

Other than that, today was great. I got to go to the ceramics lab and work on a plate that I'm making for myself. I really hope it turns out nicely because I actually like the direction it's going. I can't wait to show you guys!

rainy days

dress: urban outfitters // shirt: thrift store // tights: romwe // belt: target // shoes/cardigan: borrowed

One thing I have never liked in the clothing world is the rain boot. Having small feet, I don't really like wearing shoes that make my feet look giant. Plus I have never seen incredibly cute rain boots. But my friend Jenna has these bright pink pair and they are the closest things to cute rain boots I've ever seen. I still don't think they look incredibly awesome on me (even though the heel does make me taller--score!), but they are kind of fun to wear anyways.

This is definitely one of my favorite outfits so far though. I can finally check mark my list saying that I've successfully mastered the belted sweater look that always circulates around pinterest from Ordinary People. Even though the polka dot shirt isn't a sweater ... it's the thought that counts, right?

I am so glad the weather is starting to cool and I can finally break out my fun sweaters and cardigans and tights again. I hope you guys have a great day!

look how they shine for you

day 283

This is my friend Taylor. :) We were going to do a different concept for today, but it ended up being too dark before I finished with the prop, so we opted to try some night photos. I've never really done night shots before and still don't really know if I succeeded, but it was still a fun learning experience.

Happy Tuesday everyone! The weather here is still warm and probably will be forever, I'm convinced. After doing my fall fashions article for the newspaper, I am aching even more for some cool weather (And this week it is supposed to rain! Besides that most of my clothes are for fall and winter, being from Alaska and all.

One of the challenges of college is being comfortable with taking photos of myself in front of other people. It's definitely a lot easier to do when I have a friend, and thankfully my friend Jenna loves tagging along with me. Hooray for friends!

I hope you guys have a fabulous day!

day 282

Hooray finally a conceptual photo again! I've had this idea in my head for at least a year, and finally the ever talented Ben agreed to model for me! Inspired by this song.

It's been a pretty awesome Monday, filled with friends and laughter and happy tears and me thinking over and over how infinitely amazing college is.

sailor's call

day 280

This was actually taken last week, but I've spent four hours editing it and am making it today's 365 photo because it's my project and I can do what I want. :)

I'm slowly editing photos from that weekend and they always bring back fond memories. I can't wait to be able to take more trips like that and hang out with amazing people.

fall fashion tips: wear the unconventional

This past week, my very first article was published in my college newspaper! I thought it would be fun to share the article with you guys, as well as show some extra photos that didn't make it into the newspaper.

If there is anyone excited about fall fashion, it would be me. Coming from the cold winds of Alaska, I was practically wearing the same tank top and shorts for the entire first month of school. But with the crisp smells of fall and first days of rain beginning to greet us, I could not be happier to pull out my oversized sweaters and warm fuzzy scarves and hot chocolate mix and welcome the cold autumn months. One of the things I have learned from college is how to remix summer pieces into a fall wardrobe, and I’m here to share some tips with you fashion forward ladies (and gents)!

Big scarves are definitely still in style this season, and for good reason too. They add extra depth and texture to any outfit and keep your neck warm in the process. One thing I love doing is somewhat unconventional. If you have a sleeveless dress, you can turn it into a scarf in less than five seconds. You simply take the bottom end of your dress and pull it through the arm holes. And that’s all! Now all of my summer dresses instantly become fall accessories.
For those warmer fall days in Oregon, a nice way to stay cool is to tie the front of a maxi skirt. Not only does it add a great architectural element, but I am always game to change up the way a skirt looks and remix it.

Another great way to bring your summer dresses back into the spotlight for fall is to simply wear a shirt over or underneath the dress. I absolutely love tying button down shirts over my dresses and adding a nice bow tie to complete the look.

One of the trends that I am really excited about is the satin/silk style pant. It feels like you’re walking around in pajamas, but offset them with a structured shirt and you’re good to go. And to complete the business look, go for a blazer. For me, it’s always hard to find a good blazer that actually fits, so here’s a good tip for you thrift-happy people. Don’t be afraid to look in other sections of the store. The little boy’s section has great blazers, and if you look long enough, you just might find a coat that fits you perfectly.

Another trend that’s coming back this fall is tights underneath shorts. This one is always a gamble because it can either look classy or like your entire wardrobe exploded on you. Either keep the shorts a solid color or the tights, and since patterned tights are on the rise, it’s a nice balance if you wear a patterned shirt and tights with neutral shorts to break the flow.
Something else I love to do in the fall is wear my dresses as shirts. I am all for breaking boundaries when it comes to personal style, so wearing a bright floral piece in the dreary autumn is just my cup of tea. Thankfully, dark florals are popping up everywhere as well as geometric shapes and I’m excited to see those two patterns marry together in one awesome ensemble.

As always, I am a firm believer that you should always feel confident in whatever you’re wearing and that a person should never tie themselves down to any fashion trends. If you don’t feel good in what you’re wearing, you shouldn’t wear it. That’s the thing I love most about personal style. It’s personal. You can create your own fashion sense that has your personality woven all throughout it, so when people see you walking down the sidewalk, they get a little glimpse of how awesome and unique you are.

day 276

day 277

day 278

day 279

Here are the 365 photos from the past few days. I've been trying to finish homework first before uploading, so the blog has been put on the backburner a bit. I'm thinking of double majoring as well so mentally I am busy trying to figure out how to balance everything. But college is still the greatest thing ever and I love it so much. I hope you guys have a great day!
