my week in instagram #43

It's been a really fun week, filled with making photo props, shooting, going to senior portfolio reviews, going to film festivals, looking at cool animals, and getting lost in an art museum. Next week will be really hectic, as it is the last week of regular classes, so I warn you right now that I'll probably be missing for a couple days. Never fear though, after this week and the next, it's summer!

my week in instagram #41

mini instagram art project // acting in a film

It's been an exciting week. Coupled with last week, I've received several bits of exciting news. The first was that my photograph that made it into the Student Art Show at my college made it to the "second round," if you will, by being nominated by the professors for a Lippy Award, which is basically the highest honor at the Student Art Show. So students voted for the nominations and in a couple weeks the winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony. Cross your fingers! Another exciting bit of news is that my photography teacher "nominated" (not sure if that is the correct term, but it's the best one I got) me to submit a portfolio to the first annual photography awards at my school, where a panel of judges will look at everyone's portfolio and vote on the best one, which will also be revealed at the Student Art Awards. It's all very awesome and humbling and confidence boosting that my art is being recognized, especially when it's put in competition against people who are actually in advanced photography classes and who are older than me and who I really admire as photographers.

I've also been emailing my photography teacher about viewing photography as an art and what it means to be a photographer, and since we have been talking a lot about this recently, I just wanted to share some of the correspondence with you:

Up until very recently, I didn't consider snapshot shooters real photographers, and it wasn't until reading the words of Ansel Adams that I realized that even those candid photos have meaning, and sometimes greater meaning and emotion than the photographs that take hours to prepare for. For me, what it means to be a photographer, and really an artist in general, is to be able to adequately evoke an emotion from the viewer. If I can create an emotional response from the people who view my photographs, then I have succeeded as an artist. And the photograph in question shouldn't be confined to a fine art label, because simple senior portraits, fashion shots, and yes, even the snapshot can create deep emotions. Sure a photo can have perfect composition, perfect lighting, etc., but if it doesn't have that emotion, I would argue that it wasn't successful. So my argument is that it doesn't matter what label you give your photos, if they have that emotion, then they are art, and the person who created that art is a photographer and artist.

For the longest time I didn't consider myself a photographer or an artist, just someone who took pictures every day, due to the fact that I was constantly comparing myself to popular photographers while I was still a beginner. And while I think it's necessary to compare your work to others', especially within the business of photography, you should never be discouraged by their success. When people started taking note of my work and asking me to shoot them, that was when I began to consider myself a photographer. But now that I have been doing it for a while and I can look back on my journey so far, I think the moment I became a photographer was the moment I picked up a camera and began my first 365 project. That was the moment I took pictures seriously. Whether or not I was a good photographer was a different question, but in that act of creating that I began to undertake, that was the moment I put on the title of photographer, just like when a great painter picks up his brush for the very first time. It is that potential for greatness that labels us.

Well, this post has turned into a photography post again. Sorry about that, haha. In other news, the rest of my week (as revealed by my intagram), was filled with helping my friend Jenna with an assignment for her film class. I got to channel my inner Oklahoma girl (I used to live there) and be a cowgirl on the wild west. It was really cold and really fun.

I hope your week was fantastic!

a weekend with Matt

(my week in instagram)

airport in Alaska // flying over the mountains // in the darkroom making magic // favorite Oregon scene/on the way to pick up Matt // holding hands for the first time since January // copying Matt's instagram picture // coffee and breakfast with the most handsome guy

Surprise surprise! Matt came to visit me at college this weekend! He is considering transferring, so he came down during his spring break to check out the school and see me. On Wednesday his dad and brother came down for the day to tour the college with him, and we all got to walk around the campus, looking at art from the student art show as well as a lot of the buildings and dorms. Afterwards we all went for coffee and just hung out around town. I'm not really the most outgoing person in the world, so I'm really glad I feel comfortable around Matt's family and don't worry about what I'm going to say around them. They are pretty great people.

On Thursday Matt and I spent our time roaming around the trails, watching birds bathe in the river, talking for hours and hours, and just enjoying each other's company. It's great to be so comfortable, feel so completely yourself with another person. I guess that's what being in love feels like, companionship and laughter and wholeness. Friday we dressed up all fancy, he carrying an umbrella and me locking onto his arm, and we headed out for a night on the town. We went to a Mexican restaurant and talked for more hours and ate yummy food and told stories to each other and conspired about life and possibilities and the future. We talked about how we started dating, and the whole way we became a couple was completely by accident. It's really funny because when I first met Matt, I thought I would never be cool enough to date him, and when he first met me, he thought he could never see himself dating me. Oh how the tables turned, and I'm so so thankful I have him in my life. I know he would say the same thing. After dinner, we walked around town to various art galleries for the Art Walk, looking at beautiful art and pretending we had all the money in the world. After that we hunkered down and had a huge New Girl marathon. Finally I got to introduce him to a show instead of the other way around! The marathon was pretty extensive--over the course of the weekend we watched the entire first season. Yeah, it was intense.

Saturday we both woke up, walked to coffee in the rain, where we watched a customer flirt with the barista (so cute) and stood around looking for a seat before coming back to campus to sip on our hot chocolate and mocha. We ate a yummy breakfast, talked for more hours--I don't think I'll ever get tired of talking during meals with Matt--and then watched more New Girl until we accidentally fell asleep. It was a nice afternoon nap with the rain falling outside. Eventually people started returning home from weekend excursions (some of my friends had left for an overnight trip) and we got to hang out with them for a little bit, until Matt had to leave. The rain certainly added to the dismal mood of that walk we had to take to the car that was picking him up. I was being super melodramatic (But then again, I always am. I can't help myself.), but it's always really had to say goodbye to your best friend and be separated yet again. So now we are back to Age of Empire competitions and skype dates and texting and snapchats for the next two months. Is it too early to count down the days until the semester ends? I think not. At any rate, he is more than worth the stinkiness of a long distance relationship, and I was incredibly thankful we were able to be together for a little bit of time. I love you, Matt. I'll see you soon.

my partner in crime.

Sorry for making this post so sappy, but sometimes I just have to make a girly diary entry, especially since this weekend was so fantastic. I hope your weekend was really good as well!

my week in instagram #38 + weekly roundup

Long time no see! I've been really sick this past week, so I took a few days off to sleep, eat a lot of cold medicine, and now I'm finally feeling better and ready to go.

me during the beginnings of my illness // finished framing one of three pieces for the student art show (I find out on Monday if they make it in) // doing homework with Matt/him making me feel better // finally editing some self portraits // I finally found my novel! No more excuses for Lauren // laying outside in the Oregon sun with my roommate // eating breakfast outside // my awesome photo crew for my latest photography assignment // hanging out at the park/having a picnic with my friends

This week, I tried tomato soup and fruit juice for the first time. Being sick makes a person do crazy things, like ignore their pickiness for the sake of getting better. But seriously, I kind of want to branch out a little bit with my food choices. Tomato soup and fruit juice still taste super weird to me, but we'll take it in little steps.

Also this week, I was incredibly thankful for my friends. They are so willing to help me, be that through getting me food while I'm sick, or being my assistants for photoshoots. I really love them so much and I'll forever be grateful for them.

my clean dorm room // taking pictures in the fog with Amy // my favorite spot on campus // developed my first roll of film! // had another fire in our dorm thanks to the boys // me, haaah // preview weekend with some awesome prospective students // traveling down Oregon roads // photo adventure with flickr people!

This has been yet another fantastic week. You can follow all of my adventures @impulsings !

Weekly roundup (an effort to maintain my new years resolutions):

1. novel: nope. still didn't write a page. I need to get better at doing this one.
2. photos: just came back from a day of shooting, so I'm well on my way.
3. diy project: finished two, now just have to put them up for you!
4. outfit photos: done!
5. college street style: nope, didn't do this one.
6. book: almost done with my first one.
7. sketch: worked on a cute photo this week.

Other resolutions that included more vague ideas like getting my work out there and going to meetups were successful this week. I just came back from spending a day with my friend Heather, a previous flickr friend and now a real life friend (I'll have a post about it soon). Yay for meetups! And I just learned today that three of my photos made it into the Anchorage newspaper, which is definitely big for making people be aware that I'm around, and it was incredibly exciting to wake up to that news.

I hope your week is fantastic!

my week in instagram #32 + weekly roundup

my last day of being eighteen // looking over a beautiful city // going to the chocolatefest! // waking up to snow on the ground // finally shooting photos for my photography class // getting pretty prints in the mail // missing Matt // going to art shows // looking at books in the coffee shop

You can follow my adventures on instagram @impulsings

And in an effort to actually follow through with new years resolutions, every week along with my instagram post, I'll do a bit of a weekly roundup so that you guys can track my progress with my resolutions and so that I can keep myself accountable.

1. I didn't write a page in my novel this week, but then again, I wrote about fifteen pages total for various classes and newspaper stuff, so at least I was writing.

2. I've got more than two photos under my belt for this month.

3. I thus far haven't done a diy project, but I have purchased/found the tools for three. It's all an effort of actually doing something, which I may or may not get to by the time this month ends.

4. Two outfit posts? Check!

5. I successfully took an outfit photo this week. :)

6. Haven't read in my book this week, but I still have a few more days before the end of the month.

7. If you count doodles as sketching, then yes. But I have been doing creative things in the arena of photo props, so yay.

8. Considering I spent no money this week, I'm good.

It's been a pretty successful week, even amongst all the stress. But now it's behind me and next week should be pretty relaxing.

Hope your week is good as well!

my week in instagram #26

1. Chilling out at the dorm Christmas party drinking hot chocolate (out of a mug I made!) and making snowflakes. My roommate Annette is amazing at making snowflakes she's been helping me make some pretty cool ones. Our window is currently covered in our snowflake creations.

2. Finally hung up the Brave posters Matt got for me. I seriously loved all the art in that movie. Looking at the art makes me want to go to Scotland and Ireland so badly.

3. Snowflakes in the common areas! Courtesy of all the awesome people living in our dorm.

4. Glazing a random pot. I have just a couple more things I need to glaze, but I'm so sad ceramics is over. My teacher was sad I couldn't come back next semester, but one day I shall take all the ceramics classes. Even though some days were really frustrating, I loved being able to create things that I use in real life. It's practical art.

5. Making Christmas cookies! I might have eaten these all in one sitting.

6. Shadow play. This was a cool display at a senior art exhibition. I need to go back and take real pictures there.

7. Snowflakes everywhere! Oh my goodness, I took a lot of pictures of snowflakes this week.

8. Dressing up all fancy to celebrate the end of the semester by eating cheesecake with awesome people!

9. Forever fascinated by interesting ceilings. Whenever I finally get my own house, you can bet the ceilings will be awesome.

As always, you can follow my adventures on instagram @impulsings. Hope you guys have a fantastic week!

my week in instagram #24

a 365 photo // making snowflakes // puddles and rainy days // burnt popcorn and the fire department in our dorm // holding Matt's hand for the first time in three months // playing bingo // Matt and I // Matt in his hypothetical home office // finishing up my plate in ceramics

Hey everyone! I hope you had a good Thanksgiving. It was a nice break for me not having to worry about homework or shooting anything conceptual or working on blog posts, but I'm excited to get back into the schedule of things. The time with Matt was definitely way too short and I'm already counting down the days until Christmastime.
